How to engage a fractional CCO

Hiring a fractional chief commercial officer is a smaller commitment than a full-time hire, and it works best when the scope is clear before it starts. This is how I structure an engagement for a deeptech company.

Start with four weeks

I suggest a first period of four weeks with a clear scope and a price. In that time you get the buyer map, a rebuilt commercial story and a first outreach plan. You can judge the value before you commit to more.

Then choose the shape that fits the stage

After the first period there are three common shapes:

  • A launch program of 8 to 12 weeks for a seed-stage company that needs its first partnerships.
  • An embedded operator for a Series A company that needs commercial leadership inside the team for a while.
  • Ongoing advisory for companies that have the process and want a senior second opinion.

Scope fixed, fee monthly

The scope is fixed and the fee is a monthly retainer, so both sides know what the work is and what it costs. I agree the outcomes in writing at the start, for example a number of qualified conversations, a pipeline in place or a first agreement under negotiation.

For ventures short of cash, equity-blended structures are possible. They are agreed in the proposal, together with what happens if either side wants to stop.

When to extend, and when to stop

After three or six months we evaluate. Either the company is set to continue without me, or it makes sense to extend. A good fractional engagement ends with the company needing less of me, because the process runs inside the team.

What I need from you

Three things keep the work moving:

  • Access to the people who know the technology, for a few hours in the first two weeks.
  • A decision-maker who can say yes to agreements, and who joins the weekly review.
  • Honesty about what is proven and what is still an assumption.

Questions

Is a fractional CCO cheaper than a full-time CCO?

The cost and the commitment are smaller, and the work is scoped. You pay for the days the work needs, not for a full-time senior hire before the company can use one.

Can the fee be partly equity?

For ventures short of cash, yes. It is agreed in the proposal, with clear terms.

Do you work with companies outside Sweden?

Yes. I work with companies in Sweden, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Spain, in person and remotely.

Want to talk it through?

Write me a few lines about the company and where it stands. If it helps, we can start with two hours on your own AI agent, which gives time back in the first week and shows how I work.
