Research spin-outs

From the lab to your first industry partner

I help research teams and university spin-outs find the buyers, shape the first agreements and build the commercial materials that get a meeting taken seriously.

Who this is for

Research groups and founding teams leaving a university, and the tech-transfer and innovation offices that support them. Often a material, a process or a device at an early stage of readiness, with a clear scientific edge and a market that is still an idea.

The gap between a result and a customer

A strong result does not sell itself. The people who can say yes work in procurement, innovation and operations, and they judge the offer by what it does for their product, not by how clever the science is.

Closing that gap takes someone who can read both sides: the research, and the organisation that might use it.

What I do

Find the real buyer

Stakeholder interviews and an organisational map of the companies that could use the technology, so you spend time on the people who can decide.

Shape the first agreement

A pilot or a joint development agreement that fits what both sides need, with clear stages and a way for each to stop.

Build the materials

Pitch, executive summary and proposal rebuilt for a multi-person decision, in a language the partner already uses.

Start the pipeline

A CRM, an outreach rhythm and a weekly review, so progress is visible and nothing goes quiet.

Proof

  • Two KTH spin-offs that went from first contact to commercial commitment in under three months, against a typical two years or more.
  • Fractional CCO at Reselo (birch-bark biopolymer, a Wallenberg Wood Science Center and KTH spin-off and EIC Accelerator company): joint development agreements with Fortune 500 and tier-1 leaders in automotive, tyres and sportswear, including Scania, Nokian Tyres and Adidas, across Europe, APAC and North America. The first was signed in about three weeks.
  • Urban Oasis (the Nordics' first large-scale vertical farm): the full production sold within about 90 days, and the traction behind a joint-venture exit with Svegro, Sweden's largest industrial grower.
  • Twenty years as a commercial operator and 15+ ventures. Since May 2026, selected commercial expert in the EIC Tech to Market programme (EISMEA), supporting EIC-backed deeptech researchers and innovators on translating science into a commercial case.

How we work together

A first period of four weeks with a clear scope and a price. If it works, a launch program of 8 to 12 weeks, scoped to what the technology needs, or ongoing advisory.

For teams without a budget yet, equity-blended structures are possible.

A quick way to start: your own AI agent

Often it starts with two hours in which I set up your own AI agent. It gives real time back in the first week, and it shows how I work before we talk about anything larger. From there, the commercial work grows out of what we find. The setup has its own home at egenaiagent.se.

Questions

When should a spin-out start working on the commercial side?

As early as there is a result worth showing. The first conversations with buyers shape what you build next, so they are cheaper to have early than late.

Do you take equity?

Equity-blended structures are possible for ventures short of cash. The structure is agreed in the proposal.

Can you work with my university's innovation office?

Yes. I work with founders and with the offices that support them, and the first step is usually a short call with both.

Do you work with EIC Accelerator companies?

Yes. I led the commercialisation of Reselo, an EIC Accelerator company, and I am a selected commercial expert in the EIC Tech to Market programme, where I support EIC-backed deeptech researchers and innovators on the commercial side: the market, the buyers and the first partnerships. That commercial case is what the Accelerator and the investor conversations after it rest on.

How do we start?

Write to me with a few lines about the technology and where it stands. We talk, and if it fits I propose a four-week start.
